History

Joe Shanahan opened smartbar in 1982 at 3730 N. Clark St., first on an upper floor of the building that housed Stages Music Hall, which he turned into Metro. He took the name from a line in A Confederacy of Dunces, “Let’s go to a smart bar.” The basement club became a home for house and other dance music, with early regulars including Frankie Knuckles and Joe Smooth, and it still books DJs from Chicago and abroad.
