History

ABG’s is short for A. Beuford Gifford’s Libation Emporium, a name booker John-Ross Boyce told NPR was invented—nobody by that name existed—so the bar would land near the front of the phone book. The Center Street dive is downtown Provo’s main room with a liquor license, and Boyce has said that lets it pay local bands a meaningful guarantee, which he treats like a weekly grant. Gary Whiting has owned the bar, and weekends often put live music in the back of the room.
