Miller's

History

Miller’s opened in the early 1980s in the old Miller’s drugstore on Charlottesville’s Downtown Mall, keeping the 1920s pharmacy shelves, tin ceiling, and soda-fountain freezer. Owner Steve Tharpe invited trumpeter John D’earth and the band Cosmology to start a Thursday jazz night that has run for decades. Dave Matthews bartended there and has said the bar is where he met the musicians who became the Dave Matthews Band. Later owner Scottie Kaylor kept the jazz night going.
