History

Teragram Ballroom opened on May 31, 2015, with a sold-out Spoon concert, after Michael Swier — a founder of New York’s Mercury Lounge and Bowery Ballroom — spent nearly three years converting a 1913 silent-movie house. The building, opened as the Playhouse Theater, later spent decades as a print shop before the roughly $3 million rebuild created a standing-room club for about 600 people, with a balcony and a 30-foot stage. The name reverses “Margaret,” for Swier’s late wife Margaret Hannigan. It books touring indie, rock, and related shows on the Westlake edge of downtown Los Angeles, at 1234 W. 7th Street.
