The Wilbury

History

Jeremy Matlow and Ryan Smith, owners of Gaines Street Pies, bought the former St. Michael’s Pub at 513 W. Gaines St. and opened The Wilbury on November 11, 2016, during the Gaines Street Festival. Smith suggested the name, a nod to the Traveling Wilburys and to an old definition of a wilbury as a mischievous mechanical gremlin. They kept a neighborhood bar and added barbecue, games including mini bowling, and live music, mixing local bands with modestly priced national acts. Smith said they wanted to hold onto the music and art character of the Gaines Street district.
