History
Jeff and Tami VandenBerg, the brother-and-sister owners of The Meanwhile, opened The Pyramid Scheme in April 2011 at 68 Commerce Ave. SW in Grand Rapids’ Heartside neighborhood. HopCat owner Mark Sellers helped finance the opening, then transferred his stake and kept the building. They rebuilt a long-vacant former dance club into a free front bar with a large pinball collection and a back room for about 420 standing. The club books indie, hip-hop, comedy, and dance parties and does not take a cut of artist merchandise.
