Prosperity Social Club

1109 Starkweather Ave, Cleveland, OH · about 120

History

Stanley Dembowski opened Dempsey's Oasis in 1938 at 1109 Starkweather Avenue in Tremont, in a spot that had been Hot Dog Bill's, naming it for boxer Jack Dempsey and later calling it Dempsey's Oasis Tavern. Weekend entertainment ran to polka bands, musical shows, and comedians. His son Richard and daughter-in-law Theresa ran it from 1967 until 2000. Bonnie Flinner bought it in 2005 and renamed it Prosperity Social Club; Will Hollingsworth, owner of The Spotted Owl, purchased it in 2021. Old-World Wednesdays still bring an accordion and polka.
