History

Sally O’Brien’s Bar & Grill, at 335 Somerville Avenue in Union Square, was opened by Liam Mannion and Gilbert Carey on St. Patrick’s Day 2003. The Boston Herald called it a pub rather than a rock club and described a roots-music room where, for the 2009 compilation Song for Sally, a band had to play at least once a month to be included. The Somerville Times has covered standing nights there, including the BT/ALC Big Band, the White Owls, Dub Apocalypse, and the Gravel Project. The bar’s site dates the building circa 1923, and the room still books local roots, rock, and other live music most nights.
