Anne Wind and her husband, promoter Tim Hall, who had run a club in San Diego, opened Jack Rabbits in February 1999 on Hendricks Avenue in San Marco. The room is a 1941 commercial building that had just been vacated by a tavern called Izzitz, and Gainesville band Big Sky was the first headliner, a sellout. Hall books through Jax Live Presents, focusing on original indie, punk, metal, and alternative shows for a few hundred people rather than cover bands. Early bills included Modest Mouse, Death Cab for Cutie, and Paramore.
