Bandmates Hunter Johnson and J.P. Powell have run Lucky since November 2010, modeling the Kirk Avenue room on places they liked while touring with their band My Radio. With chef Jeremy Smelser they built a dinner-and-drinks spot they describe as closer to a Lower East Side bar than to a typical Southwest Virginia night out: dim light, no televisions, local produce, fried chicken, and a long whiskey and cocktail list.
