The Short Stop opened in 1966 in Echo Park, its name inspired by the nearby ballpark, and became a hangout for off-duty LAPD officers. After the Rampart scandal, then-owner Mike Balmer planned to close at the end of 2000. Six friends, among them Afghan Whigs frontman Greg Dulli, bought it and reopened the room as a dance bar. It kept the name and the cop memorabilia and drew a late-night crowd for DJs and a dance floor.
