Henry Friedel opened The Shanty in March 1968 on Allen Street as a steak and seafood house. Don and Diane Saylor bought it from him in 1976 and in 1980 moved it to 617 N. 19th Street, a former A&P that had been a car showroom. They sold in 2005 to New York restaurateur Kil Jin Kim; the business soon failed and the building sat empty. Former Shanty chef Ron Pickering and partner Joe Tatasciore revived it in 2014 as The Shanty on 19th, in the West End theater district.
