Mates of State
Lawrence
Bio
Mates of State are an indie-pop duo formed in Lawrence, Kansas, in 1997 by Kori Gardner and Jason Hammel, who met there while playing in the band Vosotros. Gardner sings and plays organ, synthesizer, and piano; Hammel sings and plays drums. After moving to California they released My Solo Project, then Our Constant Concern and Team Boo on Polyvinyl, and later Bring It Back, Re-Arrange Us, and Mountaintops on Barsuk. Their songs ride dual vocal harmonies and fast, shifting rhythms, and they have toured the U.S., Europe, Japan, and Australia.
